Tribal Comfort was born from listening to our whānau.

Established by Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui a Rua Trust, Tribal Comfort grew from the experiences, challenges and aspirations shared by our people during some of the most difficult times our communities have faced.

During COVID-19, our engagement with whānau became more personal than ever. As we delivered kai parcels, blankets, clothing and other essential support, whānau welcomed us into their homes and shared the realities of their everyday lives. We saw firsthand the pressures many households were facing and gained a deeper understanding of what our people needed to live healthy, secure and comfortable lives.

That understanding has continued to grow through the work of Te Kahu Hauora o Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui a Rua, our hauora arm. Through its programmes, direct engagement and insights gathered from whānau, our Trust has developed a clearer understanding of the challenges facing our people and where we can make a meaningful difference.

Then came Cyclone Gabrielle.

Across Wairoa, Heretaunga, Te Whanganui-a-Orotū and our coastal communities, whānau were affected in ways that will be felt for generations. Some lost their homes. Others lost the things that made their houses feel like home—beds, furniture, linen, clothing, appliances, treasured possessions and taonga.

It made us ask a simple question:

When our whānau are ready to rebuild, how can we help them make a house a home again?

For some, rebuilding means taking on a mortgage for the first time. For others, financial pressures existed long before the cyclone. Today, some whānau still have three or four tamariki sharing a bed, households sharing one set of blankets, and families doing their very best with what they have.

That is where Tribal Comfort began.

Our kaupapa is simple: to create more comfortable circumstances and better livelihoods for our people.

Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui a Rua has built relationships and partnerships across Asia, particularly in China and Vietnam, to source quality products and bring them directly to Aotearoa at prices that are genuinely accessible to whānau.

We began with furniture, mattresses, bedding and linen, including high-quality linen made for the international hotel market. As Tribal Comfort grows, so will the range of products and opportunities we can provide.

But Tribal Comfort is about much more than selling furniture.

We are not here to maximise profit from our whānau. We are using the collective strength and resources of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui a Rua to create greater buying power for our people. Our aim is to keep prices affordable while generating enough income to sustain Tribal Comfort, reinvest in our kaupapa and create opportunities for future generations.

When our whānau purchase through Tribal Comfort, they are also reinvesting in something that belongs to them—their own iwi, their own kaupapa and their own future.

And this is only the beginning.

Comfort is more than a bed, a couch or a warm blanket. It is a healthy home. It is hauora. It is whānau. It is connection to our whenua and te taiao. It is dignity, security and the ability to provide for those we love.

Tribal Comfort begins here, with Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui a Rua, and with an aspiration that, over time, what we build will benefit whānau throughout Ngāti Kahungunu and across Aotearoa.
